“UK Heatwave Sparks Travel Chaos”

Published on

Unprecedented high temperatures have caused widespread travel disruptions in the United Kingdom, leading to cancellations and significant delays as residents endure sweltering conditions.

Transportation companies have issued warnings to passengers, anticipating major delays on the first workday after the recent bank holiday weekend. The UK experienced record-breaking spring and May temperatures, with Kew Gardens in West London hitting 34.8C.

Central England is under a yellow weather warning, with thunderstorms expected from Bath to Leeds. The Met Office cautioned about potential disruptions to train and bus services due to flooding and lightning strikes.

While not all delays can be directly attributed to the extreme heat, travelers on affected routes are advised to carry water with them. Additionally, they are encouraged to inquire about water fountain locations at stations and avoid boarding services if feeling unwell.

Train operators have alerted passengers to service cancellations and restrictions as temperatures soar nationwide. Great Northern reported overhead electric wire damage halting services between Cambridge and Kings Lynn.

The disruptions are projected to persist until 3:30 pm today, with LNER citing speed limitations on its routes causing delays. It revealed adjustments to services, favoring Azuma trains over InterCity225 trains for better air conditioning.

South Western Railway slowed down Waterloo services for safety inspections due to reported track smoke between Waterloo and Vauxhall.

ScotRail and National Rail also reported disruptions, while motorway delays may not solely result from traffic congestion, urging travelers to carry water to manage prolonged journey times.

Various road closures and delays were reported, including a multiple-vehicle collision on the A3 southbound and serious collisions on the A1 northbound and M5 northbound, causing significant delays and congestion.

The AA responded to a notable increase in breakdowns during the holiday period, attributing the rise to the strain of heatwave conditions on vehicles.

The UK continues to experience exceptionally hot weather, with some inland areas surpassing temperatures in Majorca. The Met Office reported numerous sites exceeding 30C on Monday, emphasizing the extraordinary heatwave conditions.

To qualify as a heatwave, temperatures must consistently exceed set thresholds for three consecutive days, with certain UK regions surpassing the 28C benchmark.
