“Stepmother Convicted 47 Years Later in Scalding Bath Death”

Published on

A young girl tragically passed away after being severely burned in a scalding hot bath by her stepmother. The victim, Andrea Bernard, was only five years old when the incident occurred at her residence in Thornton Heath, south London, in 1978. Janice Nix, now 67, was visibly emotional as she was convicted of manslaughter almost five decades later.

Andrea, who suffered extensive burns on half of her body, pleaded with Nix, saying, “this is too hot, mummy.” Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries in the hospital on July 13, five weeks after the harrowing incident. Following Nix’s conviction, the police released a photo of Andrea eagerly anticipating her last Christmas.

Subsequently, it was revealed that Nix was also responsible for assaulting and mistreating Andrea’s older brother, Desmond Bernard, between 1975 and 1978. Nix provided conflicting accounts of the events during a voluntary police interview compared to her testimony given to the coroner in 1978, as stated by prosecutor Kerry Broome.

Desmond Bernard, now 56, came forward to the authorities after feeling overwhelmed by the burden of his sister’s death. He disclosed that Nix regularly subjected them to physical abuse for minor infractions, such as not meeting her standards in tasks like folding clothes.

During the trial proceedings, Desmond emotionally shared that he initially described his sister’s demise as an accident to stop Nix from further harming him. He detailed the physical abuse they endured, including beatings, burnings, and degrading treatment by Nix.

The court learned that on a particular day in 1978, Nix became agitated when Andrea disobeyed instructions and shouted at her before forcing her into a scorching bath. Desmond recalled hearing the commotion and the tragic outcome that followed.

Moreover, during the trial, it emerged that Nix initially misled investigators during the 1978 inquest, claiming Andrea had bathed alone and later fell ill. However, she admitted fabricating the story due to her negligence in supervising Andrea during the bath.

Subsequently, Nix was apprehended at Heathrow Airport in 2025 and promptly charged after her arrival from Antigua. Despite her denials, she faced charges of manslaughter and child cruelty in connection to Andrea’s tragic death.

Aisling Hosein of the Crown Prosecution Service remarked on the case, highlighting the prolonged abuse suffered by Andrea and her brother at the hands of Nix, ultimately leading to the young girl’s untimely demise. The prosecution was made possible by the courage of Andrea’s brother, who bravely brought the truth to light after decades of silence.
