A fresh Boyzone documentary is set to provide fans with an authentic look into their final performances. The upcoming show will offer amusing, candid, and insightful glimpses into the band’s farewell preparations.
Following the success of the three-part documentary “Boyzone: No Matter What” last year, which traced their rise to fame, the Irish pop group is back in the spotlight with “One for the Road.” This new documentary captures their journey towards a final reunion.
In a significant announcement last September, all four original members – Ronan Keating, Mikey Graham, Keith Duffy, and Shane Lynch – revealed plans for a special one-off concert at Emirates Stadium on June 6. Due to overwhelming demand, an extra performance on June 5 was added to accommodate eager fans.
The latest documentary delves into the band’s personal history and the expectations of their devoted fans, as they navigate through unresolved tensions from their previous tour in 2019. The members are determined to bid farewell on their own terms, aiming for a deserving and memorable closure.
During an interview on ITV’s “This Morning,” Ronan expressed the excitement of compiling the setlist for the upcoming shows, which includes long-unheard songs. Keith Duffy shared his initial apprehension about rehearsals but found solace upon reuniting with the band members. The group plans to honor their late bandmate, Stephen, throughout the performances, celebrating his memory and legacy.
The documentary sheds light on the band’s decision to hold two shows at Emirates Stadium due to unprecedented demand, with Ed Sheeran playing a role in encouraging their reunion after being moved by their previous documentary. While not performing in Ireland, the band acknowledges the fans’ disappointment but urges them to secure the remaining tickets.
Executive producer Dov Freedman praised the positive response to the initial series, highlighting the authenticity and honesty that resonated with audiences. Sky’s head of documentary commissioning, Hayley Reynolds, expressed enthusiasm for documenting this significant reunion and the enduring bond between Boyzone and their dedicated fan base.
Described as a heartwarming, humorous, candid, and revealing narrative of friendship, forgiveness, aging, and legacy, “One for the Road” will explore the lasting connection between Boyzone and their supporters. Established in 1993 by talent manager Louis Walsh, Boyzone has achieved global success with seven studio albums and over 25 million records sold worldwide.
Though the band initially parted ways in 1999 before reuniting in 2007, they faced a tragic loss with Stephen Gately’s passing in 2009 due to a congenital heart defect. Boyzone embarked on their final tour in late 2018 to commemorate their 25th anniversary before disbanding once again after the tour’s conclusion.
“Boyzone: One for the Road” is slated to premiere on Sky and Now platforms later this year.
