“UK Travelers Face Chaos: Long Airport Queues Lead to Missed Flights in the EU”

Published on

Passengers from the UK traveling to European countries are facing extensive airport queues, resulting in missed flights due to new border checks causing disruptions across the EU. Frustrated travelers have taken to social media to express their dismay over the long waits at passport control in overcrowded terminals within the Schengen zone, turning their intended relaxing vacations into stressful ordeals.

One Facebook user, Clarissa Ward, shared her experience of waiting in the longest line she had ever seen, witnessing elderly individuals, families with young children, and numerous passengers missing connections or flights, including herself. Limited assistance was provided by airport staff, with only TAP passengers receiving priority if on the brink of missing their flights, leaving others stranded in the queues since the introduction of the new system in October.

Another traveler, Craig Hackett, recounted arriving three hours early for departure, checking bags promptly, yet encountering enormous queues just to access the boarding gate. This resulted in him and several other passengers missing flights despite their early arrival, highlighting the lack of prioritization, fast tracking, or sufficient support from airport personnel or airline representatives.

The delays stem from the implementation of the EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) launched on October 12, 2025, requiring non-EU visitors, including British citizens, to provide fingerprints and undergo photography when entering or exiting the Schengen zone. The Schengen area, comprising 29 European nations, is the largest free-travel zone globally, with EU officials emphasizing that the enhanced checks aim to bolster border security and curb illegal immigration.

Airlines have voiced concerns over the extended processing times due to the new system, prompting calls for governments to suspend the EES to alleviate lengthy border control queues, particularly during peak travel periods. Ryanair, for instance, urged the Portuguese government to halt the EES until after the peak summer season to prevent excessive wait times at Portuguese airports, emphasizing the need for smoother travel experiences for passengers during busy periods.
