“Energy Bills Soar: Household Costs to Rise by 13%”

Published on

Millions of households are set to face a substantial increase in their energy bills this summer as Ofgem has announced a new price cap. The typical dual fuel household, paying by direct debit, will see their annual bill rise by 13% to £1,862 starting in July. This translates to an increase of £221 per year or £18 per month based on the current price cap of £1,641.

The rise in energy costs will affect electricity bills by approximately 5% and gas bills by 24%. The price cap impacts numerous households in England, Wales, and Scotland. The surge in prices was largely anticipated due to the ongoing conflict in Iran, leading to a rise in global energy prices following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Analysts are already predicting another increase in the price cap for the upcoming winter season, coinciding with the usual rise in energy consumption during colder months. Cornwall Insight forecasts a 2% rise in the October price cap to £1,899 annually. Ofgem adjusts its price cap every quarter.

Dr. Craig Lowrey, Principal Consultant at Cornwall Insight, expressed concerns about the potential impact of rising prices coinciding with the onset of winter. He highlighted that the effects of the Middle East conflict on energy prices may persist longer than expected due to infrastructure damage and market disruptions.

Consumers are advised by Richard Neudegg, director of regulation at Uswitch.com, to consider switching to a fixed energy deal to potentially save money amidst the price hikes. Locking into a fixed deal now could help avoid the impending rises in energy costs.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband acknowledged the challenges faced by households due to the price cap increase and outlined government initiatives to alleviate the burden on consumers. Despite its name, the Ofgem price cap does not restrict the total energy bill but sets limits on unit rates and standing charges.

The price cap is recalculated every three months to reflect changing wholesale costs and consumer usage patterns. Various factors, including geographic location and payment methods, can influence individual energy bills. Consumers are encouraged to review their energy tariffs to ensure they are on the most cost-effective plan.
