A sudden health crisis altered the life of 51-year-old Kim Oakhill when what seemed like night sweats and hot flashes turned out to be a grim diagnosis. Now, she is endeavoring to raise funds for access to a specialized medication not accessible through the national healthcare system.
Before being diagnosed with advanced lung cancer at the age of 48 in 2024, Kim enjoyed good health. However, she started experiencing persistent leg pain, fatigue, night sweats, and hot flashes. Initially attributed to perimenopause, she was prescribed hormone replacement therapy (HRT) which did not alleviate her symptoms.
Despite an increase in her HRT dosage, her condition continued to deteriorate. By February 2025, Kim developed a cough initially thought to be an unrelated infection. Subsequent diagnoses included acid reflux, asthma, and a chest infection, with no relief from medication. Additional symptoms emerged, including alterations in her voice.
After undergoing a CT scan to rule out serious conditions, Kim was swiftly informed of a cancerous mass on her right lung classified as stage four, with the cancer spreading to her heart and brain. Following this shocking revelation, Kim underwent rigorous rounds of life-prolonging chemotherapy.
Post-treatment in April, she endured excruciating limb pain, hair loss, and severe sickness. Uncertain about the cancer’s recurrence timeline, Kim was informed that the NHS had exhausted its treatment options. Understanding her limited life expectancy, she is striving to raise £150,000 for private targeted therapy.
Kim remains resolute, focusing on her family and herself despite the consuming nature of her situation. Never a smoker, she aims to dispel the misconception that lung cancer solely affects smokers. She emphasizes that anyone with lungs can develop lung cancer.
