Fresh heat health alerts have been issued for three regions in the UK over the next 52 hours, with the Government cautioning about an increased risk to vulnerable individuals. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has announced that yellow alerts are in effect for the East of England, London, and the South East starting from Thursday, May 28 at 4 pm until Saturday, May 30 at 8 pm. This alert signifies potential impacts on health and social care services, a heightened risk to vulnerable individuals, and an anticipated rise in healthcare service utilization. The UKHSA has highlighted that indoor settings are at a higher risk of experiencing elevated temperatures during this period.

Additionally, the agency has raised concerns about a potential increase in water-related incidents, such as cold-water shock and drowning. Previously, a series of amber alerts were issued last week for the Midlands, Eastern England, and South Eastern England. Originally set to expire on May 28 at 5 pm, these alerts were lifted earlier on the same day. The UKHSA expressed surprise at having to issue these warnings at this early stage of the year.

On Tuesday, the UK witnessed a record-breaking temperature for the hottest day in May for the second consecutive day, with temperatures reaching 35°C at Heathrow and Kew Gardens, as reported by the Met Office. The forecast indicates that some warmth will persist, especially in the southeast, with temperatures possibly reaching 32°C on Thursday before tapering off to around 28°C on Friday as the influence of high pressure gradually diminishes.
