“University Students Rally to Raise Funds for Father’s Cancer Treatment”

Published on

An army of young adults has raised significant funds to support a father’s urgent cancer treatment through a lively university party. Simon Hollister, a 54-year-old battling Glioblastoma, a severe form of brain cancer, is determined to prolong his life by seeking Avastin treatment. With limited NHS support for brain tumors, Simon faces hefty costs of around £80,000 per treatment round.

Students at the University of Surrey organized a charity event, “Get Hammered For Charity,” which drew over 1,000 attendees and generated £6,000 in donations. Despite being touched by the students’ gesture, Simon humorously noted that he was deemed too old to attend the event.

Following a Glioblastoma diagnosis last year, Simon underwent surgery to remove 80% of the tumor. Despite the terminal nature of the disease, he remains optimistic, setting a goal to witness his youngest son’s 21st birthday in 2031. Simon’s resilience and fundraising efforts, including a GoFundMe page, have already garnered £37,000.

Simon emphasizes the importance of increased government funding for Glioblastoma research, highlighting the low allocation of resources for this specific cancer type. He urges for more awareness and support for those battling this aggressive disease, emphasizing the power of positivity in extending one’s life expectancy.
