Rachel Nickell’s son recently recounted the traumatic event of his mother’s murder in front of him when he was just a child, detailing how it has profoundly influenced his life. The tragic incident occurred on July 15, 1992, on Wimbledon Common, where Rachel was brutally killed by serial killer Robert Napper while out for a walk with her two-year-old son, Alex.
Following the murder, Colin Stagg, a local dog walker, was wrongly arrested based on a resemblance to a suspect’s photofit, but the case fell apart in court due to controversial police tactics. It took 16 years for Napper to be brought to justice through advanced DNA profiling, linking him conclusively to the crime. Currently, Napper is detained indefinitely at Broadmoor high-security psychiatric hospital, with suspicions of his involvement in numerous other attacks in southeast London.
After the tragedy, Rachel’s son Alex and his father, André Hanscombe, relocated to southern France in 1993 and later to Spain in 1996 to start anew. Recalling the horrific day, Alex mentioned seeing Napper approaching with a knife and attacking Rachel, leaving him with not just emotional scars but also minor physical injuries. He also disclosed Rachel’s pregnancy discovery and subsequent abortion, along with the uncertainty of another pregnancy before the attack.
Despite forgiving his mother’s killer over time, Alex has criticized the authorities for their failures, allowing Napper to commit further heinous crimes. Reflecting on his journey of healing, Alex described a sense of enduring guidance amid the profound loss. New TV portrayals of the case, including a documentary and a dramatized series, are set to premiere on Netflix soon, shedding light on the tragic events surrounding Rachel Nickell’s murder.
