“New Treatment Shows Promise in Eliminating Resistant Tumors”

Published on

Doctors have commended the remarkable efficacy of a new treatment that successfully eliminated entire tumors in previously treatment-resistant cases of cancer during a study. The treatment led to a 42% reduction in tumor size for patients participating in an international trial conducted at the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) in London.

Carl Walsh, who battled severe tongue cancer, endured a challenging diet and relied on prescribed nutritional milk drinks to cope with his condition. Despite struggling with speech and difficulty eating due to swelling and pain, he persisted through the tough times. Carl was part of a group of 102 individuals with head and neck cancer who took part in a study evaluating a promising triple-action cancer injection at The Royal Marsden hospital in London, where researchers observed unprecedented outcomes, including complete disappearance of tumors in some patients.

The drug, called amivantamab, is administered every three weeks and works by targeting a key protein known as EGFR that aids in cancer development, blocking a pathway called MET that allows tumor cells to resist treatment, and stimulating the immune system to combat the cancer cells.

Carl, hailing from Birmingham, shared his journey of failed chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatments before joining the OrigAMI-4 trial, which brought positive changes to his health. With just two treatment cycles, he noticed a significant improvement in his diet and speech, eventually leading to a return to normalcy in his daily life.

The trial, led by researchers at The Institute of Cancer Research in London, took place across 55 hospitals in 11 countries, involving patients whose cancers had progressed despite previous treatments and were not associated with HPV, a virus known to impact treatment response.

Approximately 42% of patients receiving amivantamab experienced tumor reduction, with fifteen patients witnessing complete tumor disappearance. On average, patients survived for 12.5 months post-treatment initiation, offering hope to those facing limited treatment options after conventional therapies have failed.

Professor Kevin Harrington, an expert in cancer therapies, emphasized the unprecedented success seen in patients resistant to traditional treatments, highlighting the potential of this new approach to benefit numerous patients annually in the UK and Europe.

The study, presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s annual conference in Chicago, showcased the impact of innovative cancer research in developing effective treatments for patients with limited options. The medication, manufactured by Johnson & Johnson, has gained NHS approval for specific non-small-cell lung cancer cases and is undergoing evaluation in various clinical trials worldwide, focusing on lung cancer and exploring other cancer types like colorectal, brain, and gastric cancers.

ICR’s chief executive, Professor Kristian Helin, underscored the importance of this study in demonstrating significant progress in treating challenging-to-treat cancer cases, offering hope and improved outcomes for patients.
