David Morrissey recently shared insights into his past marriage with his well-known former spouse. The actor is set to star in the highly anticipated premiere of “Tip Toe” on May 31, where he plays the role of electrician Clive alongside Alan Cumming, who portrays Canal Street bar owner Leo.
In “Tip Toe,” the two characters, Clive and Leo, who have peacefully coexisted as neighbors for 15 years, quickly turn into adversaries when Clive’s deep-seated biases are revealed. The Channel 4 thriller comprises five hour-long episodes that will air over the next few weeks. While the series is not a direct adaptation of true events, it draws inspiration from the personal experiences of creator Russell T. Davies and his friends.
David Morrissey, a respected 61-year-old British actor, known for his diverse roles in TV, film, and stage productions such as The Walking Dead, The Long Shadow, and Sherwood, has openly discussed his struggles with social anxiety and alcoholism. He revealed on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs that his battle with alcoholism stemmed from coping with social anxiety, which he has successfully managed for the past 21 years.
The actor shared that his drinking habits began during his teenage years after his father’s death and spiraled further in adulthood. However, a turning point in his life came when he sought help from a former colleague associated with Alcoholics Anonymous during a moment of crisis, leading him to achieve sobriety.
Before rising to fame, David met his ex-wife, acclaimed author Esther Freud, at drama school in 1993, eventually marrying in 2006 after over a decade of being together. The couple shares three children and peacefully separated in 2020 after a long relationship.
Following their separation, Esther embarked on a new chapter in her life, traveling and celebrating her 60th birthday with her new partner. She mentioned that their split was more due to communication breakdown rather than animosity.
Despite the divorce, David Morrissey and Esther Freud remain on good terms and maintain a close relationship. The actor has since been linked romantically to theatrical agent Larah Simpson, emphasizing the continued amicable nature of his relationship with his ex-wife.
