“Father’s £140K Loss to Facebook Deepfake Scam Sparks Legal Battle”

A father who lost £140,000 after being deceived by a deepfake video impersonating financial expert Martin Lewis on the social media platform Facebook has criticized the company for its failure to prevent fraudulent activities.

Wayne Luxon, residing in Taunton, Somerset, shared that he was emotionally devastated after falling victim to a fake AI-generated advertisement leading him to invest in a fraudulent website, resulting in a complete loss of his funds. Luxon, a father of four, is now part of a large-scale legal action against Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, alleging that these platforms allowed deceptive ads to circulate.

The 43-year-old’s ordeal began in 2020 when he encountered a video on Facebook promoting cryptocurrency investments starting from £250 to generate additional income.

Describing his experience, Luxon mentioned, “It appeared authentic, and when my initial investment doubled to £500, I was inclined to withdraw my earnings to ensure their credibility.”

As his confidence grew, Luxon made three additional investments from his savings, totaling £16,000, as he witnessed significant gains on the online platform, leading him to believe in its legitimacy.

However, when he tried to withdraw his funds, facing an account balance showing over £800,000, he was requested to pay a tax based on a percentage of his withdrawal amount. Luxon, who is self-employed, resorted to personal loans and depleting his business bank account with Barclays to gather over £100,000 for the purported tax payment.

Upon the anticipated transfer day, he discovered that his account balance had plummeted to zero, leading him to a state of distress. Luxon expressed, “The situation was devastating. I was immensely stressed, fearing the loss of my home and struggling to repay the loans, nearly £800 monthly.”

Although Barclays agreed to refund half of his initial investment, they declined to reimburse the fictitious tax amount paid. Luxon’s participation in the legal action against Meta aims to recover more of his lost funds.

He asserted, “Facebook should promptly block such misleading advertisements. It is unjust for individuals who fall prey to these schemes, and the continuous appearance of such ads on users’ feeds is concerning.”

Jakub Siwiak, another victim who suffered a loss of nearly £15,000 after engaging with a fraudulent ad on Facebook, emphasized the need for the platform to take greater responsibility. Siwiak, a 51-year-old from Worksop, faced financial turmoil when he was duped by a perpetrator masquerading as an investment broker last June.

The deceptive ad on Facebook offered lucrative returns in the foreign exchange market, but Siwiak found himself burdened with high monthly loan repayments post-realizing the scam.

Siwiak, a crane operator and supervisor, had been exploring online investment opportunities, leading to Facebook inundating his feed with money-making ads through its tracking algorithms. Falling
