Simon Woodroffe, the mastermind behind Yo! Sushi and a former Dragons’ Den investor, was once told by his chemistry teacher in school that he would either become a millionaire or end up in jail. True to the prophecy, Woodroffe experienced both outcomes in his journey.
Now aged 74, Woodroffe reflects on a life that transitioned from a privileged upbringing and attendance at Marlborough College to leaving school with minimal qualifications and delving into the music industry as a roadie. His career swiftly evolved as he became a prominent stage designer for renowned musicians like Sir Paul McCartney, Ozzy Osbourne, and involvement in Live Aid.
In an exclusive interview preceding the launch of his autobiography, Woodroffe acknowledges a transformation from his past persona characterized by being “loud, obsessed, egotistical, and self-centered.” Despite this change, he remains fervently vocal on various topics, such as his unconventional outlook on the future of the high street, advocating for its transformation into alternative spaces like apartments, climbing walls, or landing areas for drones.
Regarding governance, Woodroffe challenges traditional beliefs, expressing a preference for minimal government intervention and proposing a shift towards governance by a new generation of tech-savvy individuals. Notably, Woodroffe, a businessman valued at around £50 million residing in Thailand without UK tax obligations, remains unapologetic about his unconventional viewpoints.
Woodroffe gained public attention following the establishment of Yo! Sushi in 1997, a pioneering venture known for its conveyor belts and robotic service. Despite commencing this venture at the age of 45 with no prior experience in the restaurant industry, his innovative concept flourished, culminating in the successful sale of the business for approximately £12 million.
A pivotal moment in Woodroffe’s life occurred in 1970 when he served a three-month sentence for drug-related offenses. This experience prompted him to redirect his life path, leading to a career in stage design and later venturing into entrepreneurial endeavors, including the inception of Yo! Sushi.
With a string of accomplishments under his belt, including the success of Yotel, Woodroffe continues to harbor ambitious visions, with the Yo! brand at the core of his aspirations. His optimism shines through as he envisions a future where his legacy is encapsulated by a gravestone bearing the words “Yo! Below,” signifying his contentment and fulfillment.
“Yo! Man” by Whitefox Publishing, priced at £22.99, is set to release on June 4, offering readers insights into the remarkable journey of Simon Woodroffe.
