Denmark has reiterated its support for Greenland, with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warning that her country will react if faced with threats from the United States. The Prime Minister’s statement comes as Copenhagen and Washington continue their efforts to find a mutually agreeable solution regarding Greenland. President Trump has persistently argued that Greenland, which is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, should be under US control for national security reasons.

In an interview with the Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza, Prime Minister Frederiksen mentioned the establishment of a high-level working group to engage in ongoing discussions with the United States. Despite the talks, Denmark remains firm on maintaining its sovereignty without any intention of compromising its borders.

“I do not seek conflict with the United States, but we will defend ourselves if threatened,” emphasized Frederiksen to journalist Bartosz T Wieliński of Gazeta Wyborcza.

Following US assertions about seizing control of Greenland, all European allies have expressed solidarity with Denmark and vowed to respond similarly to any such threats. Frederiksen hopes the US comprehends that the loyalty of Greenland’s inhabitants cannot be swayed, as they have the right to determine their own future. She also highlighted that NATO has bolstered its presence in the Arctic region in response to Trump’s Greenland takeover threats, aiming to quell the debate.

These statements by Frederiksen come after a meme-filled Saturday for President Trump, who shared a meme on his own Truth Social platform depicting himself overlooking Greenland like a deity or, as locals might see it, resembling Godzilla. Trump’s persistent push for Greenland as a US territory remains a source of contention for Greenland, its people, and the Kingdom of Denmark.
