“Mandelson Files Expose Starmer Criticism”

Published on

In recently released documents, Peter Mandelson criticized Keir Starmer’s leadership in Number 10, describing it as lacking “energy.” The collection of private WhatsApp messages and emails shed light on Mandelson’s extensive involvement in government affairs, where he provided counsel to ministers and pursued his own interests while disparaging Starmer in private.

Despite being asked to share messages from his personal phone for a comprehensive report on his failed appointment as US ambassador, Mandelson refused to cooperate fully. Additionally, there are reports that he has not returned the £75,000 settlement he received.

A source within the Labour Party expressed disappointment at Mandelson’s actions, emphasizing his self-centered behavior. The documents, known as the Mandelson files, mark a significant disclosure to Parliament since the Iraq War inquiry, revealing Mandelson’s critical opinions of the Prime Minister and the government’s inner workings.

The documents unveiled a letter Mandelson wrote in December 2024, praising the decision to appoint him as US ambassador, a move that later backfired on Starmer’s leadership. Subsequently, Starmer dismissed Mandelson in September 2025 due to revelations about his association with Jeffrey Epstein, raising doubts about Starmer’s judgement.

Within the files, Mandelson’s exchanges with various officials highlighted his disapproval of the government’s approach and his critique of Starmer’s leadership style. Discussions with Cabinet Minister Pat McFadden indicated Mandelson’s belief that Starmer lacked dynamism and compared him unfavorably to Donald Trump.

Mandelson’s interactions also revealed his clashes with other prominent figures within the Labour Party, such as Gordon Brown and Wes Streeting, over various policy decisions and leadership dynamics. The documents further exposed Mandelson’s lobbying efforts to secure the position of Oxford Chancellor, which he ultimately lost.

The release of these documents comes at a critical juncture for the Prime Minister, who faces internal challenges within the party and uncertainties about his leadership. Rivals like Andy Burnham and Wes Streeting are openly engaging in a contest for leadership, adding to the political turbulence.

The revelations from the documents have sparked concerns among Labour MPs about the integrity of the political system and the concentration of power in a few hands. The mood among MPs was described as somber, with some questioning the unity within the party amidst the leaked messages criticizing the government’s performance.

Despite calls to repay or donate the settlement he received, Mandelson has reportedly not taken any action following further revelations about his connections to Jeffrey Epstein. The failure to address these issues adds to the ongoing scrutiny surrounding Mandelson’s conduct and its impact on the political landscape.
