Millions of individuals utilize weight loss and diabetes injections annually, but health authorities are cautioning patients to remain vigilant for a specific symptom that could impact their eyesight.
The warning pertains to medications containing semaglutide such as Wegovy, Ozempic, and Rybelsus. According to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), individuals encountering sudden vision issues should promptly seek medical attention.
This concern is linked to a rare eye condition called non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). NAION affects the optic nerve and can result in sudden vision loss, potentially leading to permanent impairment.
Patients using semaglutide are advised by the MHRA to seek immediate medical assistance if they observe “sudden loss or rapid deterioration of eyesight.” The regulatory body recommends discontinuing treatment if NAION is confirmed.
NAION occurs when blood flow to the optic nerve diminishes, causing damage to the nerve tissue responsible for transmitting visual signals to the brain. Manchester Royal Eye Hospital describes the condition as akin to a “small stroke” affecting the optic nerve, albeit without the typical stroke symptoms.
The hospital notes that NAION is a common cause of abrupt vision loss related to the optic nerve in individuals over 50 years old. Risk factors may include diabetes, high blood pressure, and smoking.
Symptoms of NAION usually manifest suddenly and without pain. Patients commonly report blurred, cloudy, or missing areas in their vision, typically affecting one eye.
The MHRA’s caution follows an evaluation of evidence on the safety of semaglutide medications. Large-scale epidemiological studies indicated that adults with type 2 diabetes taking semaglutide faced approximately double the risk of NAION development compared to non-users.
Despite the rarity of the condition, health officials underscore that the side effect is classified by the MHRA as “very rare,” estimated to impact up to one in 10,000 individuals using the medication.
Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Wegovy, prescribed for weight loss, as well as Ozempic and Rybelsus, used in treating type 2 diabetes. Prescriptions for these drugs have surged recently due to the increasing demand for weight management solutions.
The MHRA emphasizes that patients must not discontinue prescribed medication without consulting a healthcare provider. The regulator maintains that the overall benefits of semaglutide outweigh the known risks when used as directed.
Research by the National Centre for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) identifies NAION as a leading cause of sudden vision loss in older adults. The condition typically presents as sudden, painless vision loss in one eye, often noticed upon awakening.
