A British couple, Craig and Lindsay Foreman, have been unsuccessful in their attempt to overturn their 10-year prison sentence in Iran on charges of espionage. The Foremans were imprisoned in February after being found guilty of spying, a crime they have consistently denied. Despite their family’s efforts to attend the appeal hearing, they were not permitted to do so.
The couple’s troubles began in January 2025 when they were arrested during their motorcycle trip around the world, passing through Iran. Joe Bennett, Lindsay’s son, expressed frustration over the lack of transparency in the legal proceedings, stating that his parents were not allowed to participate in their own appeal hearing. The situation escalated further as Craig initiated a hunger strike for 25 days, while Lindsay joined him in a hunger strike lasting 16 days, with Iranian authorities severing communication between them.
In a bid to seek assistance, Bennett met with Foreign Office representatives, seeking clarity on the actions being taken to pressure Tehran for the couple’s release. Despite the failed appeal, the Foremans’ hunger strikes are seen as a last resort to push for action from their government. The Foreign Office has cautioned all British citizens against traveling to Iran due to the high risk of arrest, interrogation, or detention, emphasizing the severity of the situation faced by the Foremans. The UK government has condemned the couple’s sentence as “completely appalling and totally unjustifiable.”
As tensions mount, Bennett stressed the urgent need for a shift in the situation to secure his parents’ release, highlighting the need for immediate action.
