“IOPC Investigates Bristol House Explosion Deaths”

Published on

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has initiated an investigation into the tragic deaths of a woman and her ex-partner following a house explosion in Bristol. Jo Shaw, aged 35, lost her life due to severe injuries caused by an intentional detonation by her former partner, Ryan Kelly, 41, resulting in the demise of both individuals.

Kelly, a previous member of a local drug gang, arrived at Shaw’s residence wielding an explosive device, which he triggered, leading to the fatal outcome. A neighbor mentioned that Shaw had urged a child to play outside on a trampoline during a dispute just before the explosion occurred.

The IOPC is looking into the interactions between Ms. Shaw, Mr. Kelly, and the Avon and Somerset Police leading up to the tragic incident. Stuart Blanchard, a neighbor, highlighted Shaw’s complaints to the police about Kelly’s harassment in the days before the explosion.

Director Derrick Campbell expressed condolences to those affected and emphasized the importance of conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances preceding the May 3 events. The investigation will delve into Kelly’s history of alleged stalking, harassment, and assault to gain a comprehensive understanding of the situation.

The Avon and Somerset Police have classified the explosion as deliberate, labeling Shaw’s death as a homicide. No additional suspects are being pursued in connection with the case. Three other individuals, including a child, suffered minor injuries in the blast.

Initial reports indicated that a call reporting a domestic incident involving a known individual breaking into the house was received at 6.17 am. The caller stayed on the line as officers were dispatched, and shortly after, it was reported that the intruder was in possession of an explosive device. A tragic explosion ensued moments later, claiming the lives of Shaw and Kelly.
