Police Officers Involved in Handcuffing Dying Teen Not Currently Under Misconduct Investigation; One Officer Resigns

The recent incident involving Hampshire Police officers handcuffing 18-year-old Henry Nowak as he bled to death from knife wounds, while his killer Vickrum Digwa looked on, has sparked criticism. One of the officers implicated in the incident has now resigned.

Following false statements by Digwa at the scene of the stabbing last December, which led to Nowak’s restraint, the situation escalated. Video footage released by the police, authorized by Nowak’s family, captures the distressing moment when Nowak pleads for help, stating he has been stabbed, only to be met with disbelief by an officer.

Nowak suffered multiple stab wounds, including a fatal one to his heart, inflicted by Digwa, who carried an 8-inch blade for religious reasons. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) will be meeting with Nowak’s family to address concerns over the handling of the incident.

While one female officer has left the force since the incident, the rest of the officers involved, including the two seen in the body-worn footage, continue their frontline duties. The possibility of gross misconduct charges hangs over the officers, with potential job loss if found guilty.

The released footage showcases the chaotic scene where officers question Nowak’s injuries while he repeatedly cries out for help. Despite his pleas, proper medical attention appears delayed, ultimately leading to Nowak’s tragic death in the hospital.

The IOPC has confirmed that officers present at the crime scene are currently considered witnesses. Director Derrick Campbell emphasized the ongoing investigation and the need to review all available evidence comprehensively.

Hampshire Police has acknowledged the resignation of one officer related to the Nowak case, clarifying the status of the remaining officers as witnesses. The IOPC’s involvement continues to shed light on the events surrounding this tragic incident.
