Builders have been hard at work in Epsom constructing a new ‘mini-city’ in preparation for Saturday’s Derby, with a tight three-week deadline imposed by race organizers due to a specific act of Parliament. Mirror Online was granted exclusive access to witness the behind-the-scenes progress ahead of the Betfred Derby. The Jockey Club has injected an additional £6 million this year, with hospitality units rapidly going up on one side of the track while sprinklers ensured top-quality grass in the world-renowned winning enclosure, which has hosted legendary horses like Shergar, Nijinsky, Sir Ivor, and Galileo.

Jim Allen, the general manager, emphasized the club’s commitment to revitalizing the Derby Festival over the next five years, beginning with the current £6 million investment to enhance various aspects, from prize money to the overall racegoer experience. The partnership with O Beach Ibiza aims to introduce a new party atmosphere to attract a younger audience to the event while staying true to its heritage.

Numerous builders joined in singing Sweet Caroline as they worked around the area, reflecting the vibrant atmosphere. The Jockey Club spokesperson highlighted the ongoing enhancements to the race, including the installation of covered bleacher-style seating along the final furlong on ‘The Hill’ to provide spectators with an unparalleled view of the action, following a comprehensive six-month review process.

Jim Allen expressed his personal connection to the Derby and Epsom Downs, citing childhood memories and a deep-seated passion for the event. He acknowledged the collaborative effort involving input from racegoers, annual members, the local community, and various stakeholders to shape the event’s transformation. The ultimate goal is to continually evolve and enhance the overall experience for all attendees across the two-day festival.

Emphasizing the Derby’s iconic status as a British institution, Allen stressed the importance of providing a world-class experience that aligns with the event’s prestigious reputation, resonating with trainers, owners, and jockeys who aspire to win. The unique ambiance of Derby Day, where attendees range from formal attire to casual wear, sets it apart from other major sporting events like Wimbledon, the FA Cup, or Test match cricket.
