A young person generously donated his organs to save three lives after suffering a severe epileptic seizure. Patrick Leonard, 18, made the decision to be an organ donor inspired by his school’s head, who shared his experience as a bone marrow and stem cell donor. Tragically, on August 26 of the previous year, Patrick experienced a catastrophic seizure that left him brain dead. His lungs were transplanted to a man in his 20s, while his kidneys went to a man in his 40s and a woman in her 50s.
Patrick’s family, particularly his father Christopher, expressed immense pride in their son’s decision to donate his organs. They found solace in honoring Patrick’s wishes and received a heartfelt letter from one of the recipients, expressing gratitude for the gift of life. Patrick’s journey as an organ donor began after attending a school assembly where he learned about the impact of organ donation.
Despite facing challenges with epilepsy and depression, Patrick remained positive and resilient. His family supported him throughout his medical treatment, which included consultations with NHS neurologists and private specialists. Sadly, in August 2025, Patrick’s health took a devastating turn when he experienced a fatal seizure resulting in catastrophic brain damage.
The family, deeply touched by Patrick’s selfless act of organ donation, found comfort in knowing that his legacy would continue to help others. By sharing Patrick’s story, they raised funds for the Anthony Nolan Trust, a cause he deeply cared about. The coroner’s report confirmed that Patrick succumbed to SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy), shedding light on the importance of understanding the risks associated with epilepsy.
Patrick’s family, including his mother Hermione and younger sister Darcy, emphasized his generosity and kindness, which extended beyond his passing.
