The UK is likely to experience heatwave conditions in the coming months as per the latest forecast by the Met Office. May saw record-breaking temperatures, with Kew Gardens in London hitting 35.1C, the highest in May history. Weather models predict temperatures rising above 30C in mid-June, with the Met Office suggesting hotter than usual conditions for June, July, and August.
Despite the possibility of near-average conditions, the forecast highlights a higher chance of a hot summer. This trend aligns with the increasing temperatures in the UK due to global climate change. MeteoGroup, a provider of weather data to BBC Weather, also anticipates more heatwaves and significant temperature spikes across the UK and Europe.
Looking ahead, the Met Office forecasts showers and rain in the north-west from June 8 to June 17, while the south-east is expected to remain dry. Towards the end of this period, the south may experience higher pressure and settled conditions with temperatures staying around normal levels. Moving into June 18 to July 2, high pressure is likely to bring drier conditions to most parts of the UK, with temperatures expected to be above normal.
As June progresses, low pressure could lead to heavy showers and thunderstorms in the south, potentially bringing hot weather to some areas. This forecast indicates a summer marked by above-average temperatures and the possibility of more heatwaves in the UK and Europe.
