Astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) have received instructions to seek shelter inside their spacecraft due to an escalating air leak that has raised safety concerns on the orbiting outpost.

NASA has disclosed that the issue is impacting a portion of the station’s Russian segment, where a crew member is presently engaged in repair efforts. Specifically, the leak has been identified in the Zvezda service module transfer tunnel, a confined and pressurized passageway situated at the rear of the ISS.

The space agency has cautioned the crew to be prepared for a potential evacuation if the situation worsens. An air leak on the ISS signifies the loss of breathable air from the station into space through a crack, hole, or faulty seal, which is vital for the astronauts’ survival. The crew comprises American astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, French astronaut Sophie Adenot from the European Space Agency, and Russian Roscosmos cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev.
