Two individuals lost their lives, and multiple others sustained injuries following a fire at a popular destination for British tourists. The tragic incident occurred at a residence in Mallorca, Spain, with nine individuals requiring treatment for smoke inhalation. The fire ignited at approximately 5 am on the third floor of a building in the Magaluf area, eventually engulfing the entire structure despite residents’ efforts to contain it. Over 12 people were evacuated, and thick smoke was visible from a distance.
The blaze was finally extinguished two hours later, although the nationalities of the victims remain unknown. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire. Magaluf, situated about 14 miles from Palma de Mallorca, attracts British visitors for its beaches and nightlife.
The fire originated at the Edificio Trianón on C/ Federico García Lorca near Punta Ballena, rapidly spreading throughout the building as residents and emergency services struggled to control the flames. Calvià Town Hall reported that residents attempted to extinguish the fire without success, leading to its rapid escalation to upper floors.
Mayor Juan Antonio Amengual expressed deep sorrow over the incident, highlighting the severity of the blaze that caught many off guard. He mentioned the challenges faced by firefighters due to the fire’s location and noted that some individuals tragically perished while trying to escape. The mayor emphasized the importance of following safety protocols during emergencies to prevent further loss of life.
