Dedicated Scottish Fan Flies to US for World Cup Viewing

Published on

Neil McKnight, a dedicated fan, is embarking on a 70-hour journey to the United States to catch a World Cup group match – on a television screen. Hailing from Scotland, Neil is flying from London to Miami to witness the Brazil vs. Scotland game remotely. Despite never having traveled abroad to support Scotland before, he is fulfilling a dream that originated during the 1978 World Cup in Argentina.

Neil’s determination stems from Scotland’s recent victory over Haiti, as he aims to witness their progression to the knockout rounds. Although the trip comes with a price tag exceeding £1000, Neil is unwavering in his belief that the experience will be invaluable. Expressing his enthusiasm, Neil, a devoted Ayr United supporter, emphasized his desire to be part of the Tartan Army’s presence at the World Cup.

Opting for a unique viewing experience, Neil will watch the game on a large screen in Miami’s Little Havana suburb. To manage expenses, he has chosen a return flight to London via Charlotte rather than a direct route. A lifelong football enthusiast, Neil, now residing in Sawbridgeworth, Herts, recalls attending his first Ayr United match in 1969 and witnessing Scotland in action in 1982.

Despite the significant distance and cost involved, Neil’s decision has garnered both admiration and jest from his close friend, a QPR fan, Andy Clayden. The Scotland team, facing challenges from Haiti, Morocco, and Brazil in their group, is making its first World Cup appearance since 1998 in France. The unmistakable presence of the Tartan Army fans in Boston has been marked by spirited chants of “No Scotland – no party.”

The World Cup tournament commenced with a vibrant opening ceremony in Mexico City last Thursday, with the final scheduled to take place in East Rutherford near New York on July 19th. The exhilarating football extravaganza has captured the attention of fans worldwide, with unique journeys like Neil’s adding to the tournament’s allure.
