“Maxine Peake Speaks Out on Bafta Incident”

Published on

Maxine Peake, known for her role in “I Swear,” shared that her co-star John Davidson was deeply affected by the Bafta incident earlier this year, which caused a worldwide discussion. The BBC faced criticism for not editing a racial slur from its Bafta coverage, where Davidson, who has Tourette’s syndrome, unintentionally shouted the N-word while Black actors Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo were on stage presenting an award.

Peake expressed her disappointment, stating that she felt none of the communities present were properly cared for during the incident. She emphasized the lack of duty of care towards the actors and highlighted the importance of raising awareness about Tourette’s syndrome. Peake, who starred in the film “I Swear” inspired by Davidson’s life, mentioned that the situation had a profound impact on everyone present that day.

Davidson, honored with an MBE in 2019 for his work with the Tourette’s community, emphasized that his tics were involuntary and not intentional, expressing his commitment to promoting empathy and understanding.

Speaking at the Sheffield Documentary Festival, Peake discussed the representation of working-class voices in the media amidst rising populism. She expressed concerns about far-right movements targeting working-class voters and urged for more support and hope to be offered to disenfranchised communities.
