“Man to Stand Trial for Arson at Golders Green Memorial”

Published on

A man is set to stand trial for arson charges related to a fire that occurred at a memorial wall in Golders Green, located in north London. Ali Fallahi, a 45-year-old individual from Ilford, London, is accused of igniting the suspected arson incident at the site on Limes Avenue on April 27.

Following an inquiry conducted by counter-terrorism authorities, Fallahi is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, June 18. Allegations suggest that Fallahi intentionally damaged a memorial cabinet belonging to Miga Rally, with the intention to destroy or damage the property, or acting recklessly towards its destruction.

The memorial wall, established by the Miga Rally community group, serves as a tribute to numerous protesters reportedly killed during a crackdown in Iran in January. Additionally, a section of the wall commemorates those who lost their lives in the Hamas attack at the Nova music festival in Israel in 2023.

The fire, which started near the wall in a cabinet at around 12:15 am, was reported later that same day at approximately 7:30 pm. Fortunately, the blaze was promptly noticed and extinguished by members of the Miga Rally community, preventing it from spreading to the wall itself.

In response to the incident, Miga Rally emphasized the significance of the memorial wall as a peaceful place of remembrance, condemning any acts aimed at damaging or disrespecting the site. They expressed hope for the identification and accountability of those responsible.

The Metropolitan Police disclosed that Fallahi holds dual British and Iranian nationality. Additionally, a 38-year-old woman was arrested in connection with the incident but was subsequently released without further action.

Commander Helen Flanagan, the head of counter-terrorism policing in London, highlighted the significance of the arson charge in ongoing investigations concerning attacks targeting the Jewish community and Iranian diaspora in the city. She emphasized the commitment to ensuring all individuals involved in such incidents are brought to justice and urged the public to report any suspicious activities to the authorities for prompt action.
