“Pharmacists Warn of Patient Safety Risks Amid Medicine Shortages”

Published on

Pharmacists have issued warnings about the serious patient safety risks caused by shortages of essential medicines. A range of commonly used drugs, such as painkillers, antibiotics, blood pressure medications, and pharmaceuticals for various conditions like epilepsy, pancreatic cancer, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, and ADHD, are currently in short supply. This scarcity has led to the implementation of Serious Shortage Protocols, allowing for alternative prescriptions in cases where medications are unavailable.

Ashley Cohen, a pharmacist with nearly 35 years of experience and a National Pharmacy Association Board Member, expressed concern over the unprecedented levels of medicine shortages, emphasizing the critical impact on patient safety. He highlighted instances where the unavailability of medication, particularly in conditions like epilepsy, could lead to severe consequences such as seizures, hospitalization, or even fatalities.

The shortage of medicines is attributed to soaring global prices, insufficient government funding, and supply disruptions caused by geopolitical tensions like the Iran war and logistical challenges at the Strait of Hormuz. This situation has prompted pharmacies to face difficulties in sourcing essential drugs, with the UK lagging behind other countries in terms of access to medications.

The National Health Service (NHS) pays fixed prices to pharmacies for dispensing medicines, but the government’s price concessions list has reached a record high due to 210 medications exceeding the set prices. Global manufacturers prioritize selling drugs to countries offering higher payments, leaving the UK struggling to secure necessary supplies at competitive rates.

Mr. Cohen shared the challenges of rationing drugs like Creon, vital for patients with pancreatic cancer and cystic fibrosis, due to prolonged shortages. He expressed frustration over the lack of availability, forcing pharmacies to limit patients’ access to crucial medications, potentially leading some individuals to seek costly alternatives abroad, risking their health.

Concerns have been raised about the emergence of a black market for medicines, posing additional risks to patients. The National Pharmacy Association’s survey revealed that the majority of pharmacies perceive the current situation as a significant threat to patient safety, with pharmacy teams facing patient frustration and abuse due to medication unavailability.

Industry experts, including Olivier Picard and Dr. Leyla Hannbeck, emphasized the urgent need for government intervention to address the medicine shortages crisis. They called for the establishment of a taskforce involving key stakeholders to tackle the supply chain disruptions and ensure patients’ access to essential medications.

The Royal College of GPs supported empowering pharmacists to make necessary prescription changes when medications are unavailable, promoting timely communication between pharmacies and GP practices to mitigate the impact of shortages on patient care. Efforts to strengthen medicine supply chains and address underlying causes of shortages were highlighted as essential for safeguarding patient health.

In response to concerns raised, a Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson assured the public of the government’s commitment to ensuring a stable supply of medicines. Significant investments are being made to bolster the UK’s medicine manufacturing industry and manage disruptions effectively, with plans in place to sustain medication supplies and enhance domestic production capabilities.
