The biological mother of infant Preston Davey expressed deep anger towards Jamie Varley and John McGowan-Fazakerley, labeling them as “monsters” for the prolonged sexual abuse suffered by the child before his tragic demise. Sarah Davey emotionally testified in court about how Preston, whom she described as her “beautiful blue-eyed boy,” was let down by those meant to safeguard him, leading to a loss she believes she will never recover from.
Varley, a former teacher, was convicted of murdering the 13-month-old in a horrific incident involving a sexual assault on July 27, 2023. His partner, McGowan-Fazakerley, a financial sales manager, will also face sentencing for his part in Preston’s death and their joint assault on the child days earlier.
Preston, born to Sarah Davey, was placed under the care of Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley at nine months old in April 2023. He endured severe physical, sexual, and emotional mistreatment by Varley over several months, with McGowan-Fazakerley turning a blind eye before participating in a joint attack on Preston. The child was rushed to Blackpool Victoria Hospital on July 27 and tragically pronounced dead.
Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley are set to receive their sentences at Preston Crown Court. The court noted Varley’s behavior during the trial, describing him as manipulative and inconsistent in his testimonies and interactions, particularly during the incident at the hospital.
The judge, taking time to deliberate the sentence, has adjourned the hearing. The defense has argued against a whole-life order, emphasizing Varley’s previous positive attributes as a teacher and questioning his intent in the crimes committed. The emotional impact on the victim’s family and the disturbing details of the case have left a lasting mark on all involved, with the court proceedings continuing to unfold.
