A mother shared her distress after her one-year-old son was fatally shot by police during an incident involving an alleged shoplifting call in Senatobia, Mississippi. Vellesiya Wiley recounted attempting to indicate to officers that her son, Kohen, was in the car just before gunfire erupted. The situation unfolded at a Walmart where Vellesiya, Kohen, and a friend were shopping when law enforcement officers confronted them regarding accusations of theft.
According to Vellesiya, her friend was reversing the vehicle as officers approached with guns drawn. She raised Kohen to show he was inside the car, but as the friend continued backing up, a collision occurred. Tragically, Kohen sustained fatal injuries in the shooting, while Vellesiya’s friend was seriously wounded.
Kohen’s grandfather, Carlos Haynes, described him as a joyful infant whose life was tragically cut short. Vellesiya emphasized that neither she nor her friend had committed any crime, mentioning that security footage would validate her friend’s innocence.
There are conflicting narratives surrounding the incident. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation stated that officers encountered two individuals and a child fleeing from the store into a vehicle, which allegedly drove toward law enforcement, prompting an officer to discharge their weapon. The driver then drove to a nearby hospital where Kohen was pronounced dead.
The shooting has led to community protests and calls for transparency in the investigation. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump is advocating for justice for baby Kohen and a thorough examination of the circumstances. The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.
Efforts are underway to review witness testimonies and video evidence, including body-worn camera footage and Walmart security recordings. Mississippi Department of Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell emphasized the importance of a comprehensive investigation to provide clarity on the tragic event.
The incident has sparked public outcry and demands for accountability. As investigations continue, the community seeks transparency and a thorough examination of the events leading to the death of baby Kohen.
