Authorities at a prestigious private school in Glasgow made a concerning discovery of cocaine inside the schoolbag of a five-year-old student.
The Glasgow Academy, established in 1845, with nearly 1,700 students aged between three and 18, found the class-A substance and promptly informed the police and social services.
The incident occurred several weeks ago but has only recently come to light, according to reports from the Scottish Daily Mail.
A source within the school expressed deep concern, highlighting the potential dangers the child could have faced if they had come into contact with the substance.
The school, situated at Kelvinbridge, operates across three locations in Milngavie and Newlands, providing education for nursery, kindergarten, and prep one to four students.
Recent data from the Scottish Health Survey revealed a concerning trend, showing a doubling in the use of cocaine among adults in affluent areas, with figures rising from 2% in 2021 to 4% in 2023.
In response to inquiries, a Glasgow Academy spokesperson stated the school’s commitment to promptly addressing any concerns raised and ensuring the safety of all students under their care.
Scottish Conservative health spokesman, Miles Briggs, emphasized the severity of the incident, highlighting the broader drug issue faced by Scotland.
Efforts to obtain a comment from Police Scotland on the matter are currently underway.
