A young boy, Theo Lock, was diagnosed with a rare stage four cancer after experiencing severe leg pain that led to multiple hospital visits. Initially, his symptoms were mistaken for constipation or arthritis. Theo, only four years old and just starting school, began to struggle with debilitating leg pain that hindered his ability to walk.

Despite initial suggestions of constipation or arthritis, Theo’s mother, Jess Horne, persisted in seeking answers for her son’s condition. An x-ray revealed a suspected cyst on Theo’s hip, followed by an ultrasound uncovering a mass near his kidney, leading to the diagnosis of stage four neuroblastoma in March.

Theo is now undergoing intensive chemotherapy at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital to combat the cancer. His aunt, Poppy Lock, described Theo’s pain and how it affected his daily life, emphasizing his previously joyful demeanor.

Neuroblastoma, a rare cancer affecting children’s nerve tissue, is relatively uncommon, with around 100 cases diagnosed in the UK each year in children under 14. Symptoms may include abdominal, neck, or chest lumps, swollen lymph nodes, bone pain, and dark circles around the eyes.

In response to Theo’s diagnosis, his family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to support him and cover expenses, as Jess has left her job to care for him. The fundraiser has garnered significant support, exceeding the initial goal by raising over £23,000.

Poppy Lock, hopeful that the fundraiser will raise awareness about neuroblastoma and encourage early diagnosis, emphasized the importance of persistent advocacy for children’s health. She stressed the need for heightened awareness of this rare cancer to facilitate prompt diagnosis and treatment.
