Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones has expressed opposition to the event due to West’s history of making controversial and antisemitic remarks on social media, despite his recent public apology.

In a statement on Twitter, Mayor Gina called for the cancellation of the concert, citing concerns over hosting someone with a track record of hate speech and antisemitic comments in a city-funded venue like the Alamodome, especially on July 4th, the nation’s 250th birthday. While some have supported her stance on combatting antisemitism, others have raised arguments about freedom of speech and the economic benefits the concert could bring to the city.

This decision follows the cancellation of West’s performance at the Pulse of Gaia Festival in Reggio Emilia on July 18, as well as Travis Scott’s show at the Hellwatt Festival, both events being called off due to objections raised by the local Jewish community. The authorities in Reggio Emilia cited concerns about public safety and order in their decision to prohibit both concerts, considering the potential large crowds and the risk of disturbances.

West has faced backlash for past incidents, such as releasing a track called “Heil Hitler” in 2025, selling a swastika T-shirt on his website, and making controversial statements like claiming slavery was a choice. In an attempt to make amends, he published a full-page apology in the Wall Street Journal earlier this year, emphasizing that he is not a Nazi or an antisemite and attributing his behavior to his struggles with bipolar disorder.
