A couple in Florida avoided going to jail for child neglect after an agreement with prosecutors resulted in dropped charges. Brian, 40, and Sara Wilkes, 37, were apprehended in October 2025 when beach visitors alerted the authorities about an unattended infant on Miramar Beach. Upon police arrival, the parents had not returned to check on their child, who was being looked after by Good Samaritans at the nearby Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort and Spa. The couple eventually came back to the spot where they had left their six-month-old baby girl.
The Wilkes admitted to placing their daughter under their beach tent while she napped and then losing track of time while taking their other children for a walk, leaving their phones behind. Fortunately, the baby was unharmed, with paramedics confirming her well-being. Major Dustin Cosson of the Walton County Sheriff’s Office criticized the couple for leaving their child unattended for an extended period, emphasizing the importance of not leaving infants alone during nap time.
The Department of Children and Families intervened, placing all children in the Wilkes’ care under state custody until relatives from Texas could take over. Following a deferred prosecution agreement in May, the parents avoided jail time by paying fines, performing community service, attending parenting classes, and agreeing not to visit Walton County, Florida. Failure to comply with the conditions within a year will result in neglect proceedings being resumed.
