The Met Office has issued a warning about the persisting nighttime heat causing discomfort in residences due to elevated humid conditions. Currently, Britain is experiencing a heatwave, with unprecedented temperatures recorded and red alerts issued. This heatwave is perceived as more intense than previous ones due to unique atmospheric conditions.
The Met Office has raised concerns about the nighttime temperatures, emphasizing the challenge of cooling down for both individuals and buildings in warm, humid air. A red alert heat advisory covers significant parts of England, indicating minimal temperature drops overnight, with some areas remaining in the low 20s Celsius. These high temperatures are coupled with increased humidity levels.
Meteorologist Aiden McGivern, speaking on the Met Office’s YouTube channel, highlighted the lasting impact of high nighttime temperatures, preventing adequate cooling. He emphasized the role of humidity in making this heatwave feel particularly intense, affecting the heat index significantly.
McGivern stressed the importance of considering the combined effect of heat and humidity, known as the heat index, in assessing the severity of the situation. He noted that the heat retention in buildings over successive days contributes to the prolonged warmth.
The soaring temperatures this week are attributed to a “heat-dome” settling over western Europe, leading to extreme weather conditions across the continent and the UK.
