Renowned BBC Radio 2 host and celebrated figure in musical theatre, Michael Ball, has shared insights into a challenging health issue that severely impacted his mobility and compelled him to step back from significant professional obligations.
In an interview with Saga Magazine, the 64-year-old disclosed that persistent hip discomfort over the years led to a diagnosis necessitating urgent surgical intervention.
Michael recounted that the problem had been a lingering concern but escalated notably while he was engaged in work abroad.
Despite enduring intermittent hip pain for an extended period, he pushed through a UK tour with Alfie Boe before heading to Australia to participate in Les Misérables. However, during rehearsals, the pain intensified, making it increasingly difficult for him to cope.
Subsequent to receiving a cortisone injection for temporary relief, the situation worsened to the point where he could barely walk and was enduring excruciating pain during stage rehearsals.
While medication offered some respite, it had its limitations as he continued to perform. Following scans, medical professionals identified the severity of the damage, indicating a pressing need for hip replacement due to ligament rupture and extensive cartilage loss.
Despite being advised to undergo surgery promptly, Michael opted to complete his commitments in Australia before returning home for the operation. He mentioned that during this challenging period, engaging in a makeshift version of a TV show helped distract him from the distress.
However, the condition deteriorated to the extent that he had to miss several Les Mis performances due to his inability to walk.
Upon returning to the UK, Michael promptly underwent hip replacement surgery, describing the procedure as transformative and highlighting the revelation of enduring chronic pain for three years.
Having bid farewell to his longstanding association with Les Misérables, a production that propelled his career, Michael reflected on his recovery journey, noting a gradual return to physical activity and healthier lifestyle choices, including regular walks with his dogs.
Acknowledging the significant decision to depart from the production after over four decades, he expressed a sense of readiness as he anticipates the next phase of his career.
