“Trump Administration’s Response to Venezuela Earthquake Faces Criticism”

Published on

The response of the Trump administration to the recent Venezuela earthquake has faced criticism due to alerts being shared on social media platforms that are banned in the country. The US embassy in Caracas, which reopened in March after seven years of closure, issued alerts following two powerful earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5. These quakes resulted in the death of at least 164 individuals, with President Delcy Rodríguez stating that the death toll is expected to increase.

Although President Trump pledged assistance to those affected by the disaster, the urgent messages sent out by the administration may not have reached their intended recipients. Embassy officials utilized Twitter and Instagram to alert US citizens in Venezuela about the natural calamity, advising them to avoid damaged areas, stay away from unstable buildings, keep tabs on local media updates, and seek safe shelter.

However, many Americans residing in Venezuela might not have seen these notifications due to stringent media censorship that extends to social media platforms. With platforms like Twitter being inaccessible in the country, over 414,000 followers of the embassy’s page on that platform may have missed the crucial message. Various users, including journalist Ali Bianco, highlighted the limitations imposed on social media access in Venezuela.

Calls for unrestricted access to social media platforms to ensure information dissemination during crises were echoed online, with individuals urging the lifting of internet restrictions. Venezuelan exiles and residents expressed the urgent need for access to real-time updates to stay informed about the situation in the country. The Trump administration, having assumed control of Venezuela’s oil industry earlier this year, has committed to providing aid and support to the affected populace.

President Trump emphasized the readiness of US federal agencies to act swiftly in response to the crisis, emphasizing solidarity with the people of Venezuela. The administration’s commitment to aiding the nation during this challenging time remains steadfast.
