Radio Icon Trevor Nelson Takes Hiatus for Health

Trevor Nelson, aged 62, has shared that he is facing health challenges and will be taking a hiatus from his Radio 2 program. The renowned radio presenter mentioned that he is temporarily stepping back from work duties following some additional medical examinations. While not revealing the specifics of his health troubles, Nelson expressed his intention to focus on recuperation and aiming to return stronger to his usual self.

In a statement posted on Instagram, Nelson informed his followers, radio audience, and fans of his Soul Nation events about his decision to take a break from his professional responsibilities. He highlighted his absence from his regular Radio 2 slot this week due to advice received after a routine check-up, leading to further tests and the need for extended time off.

Emphasizing the importance of dealing with health matters based on facts rather than assumptions, Nelson underscored his dedication to recovery and eventual full restoration to resume his hosting role on the radio. Lorna Clarke, the BBC’s director of music, extended well wishes for Nelson’s speedy recovery on behalf of BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 1Xtra, anticipating his return to broadcasting duties at the appropriate time.

Acknowledging Trevor Nelson’s recent accolade at the TRIC Awards ceremony for his significant contributions to the radio and television sectors, it was noted that his illustrious career spans over three decades with the BBC. His journey began in 1996 when he transitioned from KISS FM to Radio 1, marking the inception of the UK’s first national R&B show.

Subsequently, Nelson introduced the inaugural national R&B chart show and ventured into BBC Radio 1Xtra from 2007 onwards. While maintaining his presence at Radio 1 until 2013, he expanded his reach by hosting a Radio 2 program in 2008, focusing on weekly soul music presentations. Notably, in January 2019, Trevor Nelson’s Rhythm Nation show debuted on Radio 2, evolving into a weekday afternoon slot in early 2025, succeeding Scott Mills.

Reflecting on his professional legacy, Nelson expressed his passion for work, exuding a youthful energy within the broadcasting environment despite his seniority. As the oldest daytime presenter, he humorously referred to himself as “the daddy” among his colleagues.

Listeners can catch Trevor Nelson co-hosting The Music is Black concert on BBC Radio 2 on Sunday night, featuring performances by Alison Limerick, Courtney Pine, and Omar, celebrating the essence of Black Music in Britain. The event, recorded last month at Hackney Empire, showcases a unique blend of musical talents.
