London Mayor Sadiq Khan hinted that US President Donald Trump may have a fascination with him as their long-standing feud resurfaced. The two politicians have been trading insults since 2015, with Trump accusing Khan of supporting Sharia law, to which Khan responded by calling Trump racist and sexist. The tension escalated recently when Trump called Khan a “bad person” and criticized his leadership skills.
At an event in London, Khan brushed off Trump’s remarks by jokingly suggesting that he might be living rent-free in the President’s head. He speculated that Trump’s interest in him could stem from his role as the mayor of a diverse, progressive city. Khan also highlighted London’s recognition as the world’s best city, possibly adding to Trump’s displeasure.
The prestigious Lee Kuan Yew Prize for urban planning was awarded to London in June, further showcasing the city’s success. Khan’s feud with Trump dates back to a decade ago when he criticized Trump’s anti-Muslim rhetoric. Despite the ongoing clash, Khan expressed no interest in returning to national politics, praising his current role as the mayor.
In a separate comment, Khan expressed sadness over Keir Starmer’s resignation as Prime Minister but commended him for reviving the party after the defeat in the 2019 general election. He also shared his eagerness to work with Andy Burnham, a fellow politician, and former cabinet colleague, implying a positive working relationship ahead.
