“Single Parents Face Discrimination in UK Rental Sector”

Published on

Lucy Adams, a 38-year-old single parent from Witney, Oxon, was taken aback by the intrusive queries she faced while searching for a flat to rent. Landlords and agents bombarded her with personal questions, including details about her daughter’s father, leaving her feeling drained and disheartened. The discrimination didn’t stop there; due to receiving benefits, Lucy encountered financial hurdles, such as being asked for six months’ rent upfront and being denied property viewings by some landlords.

Her story is not unique. In a recent report titled ‘Locked Out, Single Parent Discrimination in the UK Rental Sector’, over 400 parents shared similar experiences. The survey revealed that 65% of single parents faced discrimination when trying to secure a rental property, encountering obstacles like higher deposits, property viewings denial, and refusal based on their single parent status. Additionally, eviction threats were prevalent, with 17% of respondents reporting evictions at the end of their tenancies and 6% facing illegal mid-contract evictions.

The research also highlighted the disparity in child poverty rates between single parent renters on Universal Credit and those in two-parent families, emphasizing the urgent need for greater legal protections for single parent families in the private rental sector. Ruth Talbot, Founder of Single Parent Rights, stressed the importance of addressing these issues by enhancing legal safeguards and adjusting the Local Housing Allowance to align with actual rent prices.

Nathan Caplan, a disabled single dad from Colchester, shared his struggles in finding suitable accommodation. Despite his health challenges and financial constraints, Nathan faced difficulties securing a property due to landlords’ stringent income requirements and lack of consideration for his unique circumstances. Eventually, he managed to secure a rental but continues to face financial strain, relying on additional benefits to cover the rent.

Similarly, Shakeel, a freelance creative in Bristol, faced homelessness after separating from his partner. Mental health issues compounded his challenges, making it hard to find accommodation that met his needs. With the support of family, Shakeel eventually found a room to rent but remains concerned about the lack of affordable housing options and the insurmountable gap between rent prices and housing allowances.

The struggles of single parents extend beyond housing insecurity. A survivor of domestic abuse from Surrey shared her harrowing experience of being served with an eviction notice while pregnant, highlighting the vulnerability faced by individuals in abusive situations. Despite receiving disability benefits, she found it challenging to secure stable housing due to landlords’ reluctance to rent to tenants with children.

While the government has implemented measures like the Renters’ Rights Act to protect tenants, advocacy groups like Single Parent Rights argue that more needs to be done to bridge the gap between rent costs and housing allowances, enforce existing regulations, and increase social housing availability. The experiences shared by Lucy, Nathan, Shakeel, and the domestic abuse survivor underscore the need for comprehensive reforms to ensure fair and equitable access to housing for all individuals, especially vulnerable populations like single parents.
