A grandfather with a disability was shocked when he claimed he was forced to leave Asda due to a dispute over a mobility scooter. Tony Daniels, a 73-year-old from Mossley Hill in Liverpool, described being escorted out of the Widnes town center supermarket on June 18.

According to Tony, he was surrounded by security personnel and instructed to exit the store after he refused to provide personal information to use a mobility scooter. He mentioned that he is not required to give details when shopping at his nearby Asda on Smithdown Road.

In response, Asda stated that it is their protocol to request a few details from individuals using a mobility scooter in the store and clarified this policy in a letter sent to Tony, as reported by the Liverpool Echo.

Tony, a retired builder who relies on two walking sticks, recounted his attempt to use a mobility scooter trolley at the Widnes Road branch, only to be told by a security guard that he must disclose his name and address. When Tony declined and requested to speak with a manager, he alleged being confronted by multiple security guards.

Expressing his distress, Tony emphasized his disabilities and health challenges, including battling cancer, and described feeling unfairly treated by the store manager. He highlighted the difference in treatment he receives at the Asda store on Smithdown Road, where staff are accommodating and helpful.

The incident deeply affected Tony, leaving him emotional and shaken. An Asda spokesperson clarified that requesting details from mobility scooter users is a safety measure applied across all their stores. The company assured that they had reached out to Mr. Daniels to explain their policy and expressed willingness to address any further inquiries directly.
