One individual has lost their life while another is facing critical injuries following a shooting at a well-attended World Cup fan zone in California.
The incident occurred on Sunday at San Pedro Square in the San Francisco Bay Area, where large crowds had gathered for vibrant football watch parties, as confirmed by local law enforcement. Despite no World Cup matches being broadcasted during the shooting, the day’s sole tournament game had concluded by 2pm local time (9pm GMT).
San Jose police reported, “One victim was pronounced deceased on scene. The second victim was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.” The authorities are treating the case as a homicide, leading to the closure of several surrounding streets in the vicinity.
The Bay Area has already hosted five World Cup matches, with the most recent being a knockout game between Bosnia and the United States on Wednesday.
Following the shooting, there was a significant police presence, with multiple law enforcement vehicles and an individual on a stretcher being swiftly evacuated from the area. The scene was cordoned off, and most bars in the vicinity shut down as a precautionary measure.
An anonymous security guard recalled witnessing the injured person in distress, stating, “The person was still moaning and groaning, with blood visible around his neck and upper back. Police were conversing with security personnel and a few witnesses.”
