“UK Weather Update: Rainy Shift Expected After Heatwave”

Published on

A period of rainy weather is expected to impact 21 regions across the United Kingdom on Tuesday, signaling a significant shift following the recent heatwave. The UK forecast for Monday night from the Met Office indicates that heavy rain accompanied by brisk winds will move into the northwest, while other areas will experience drier conditions with clear spells and a cool night.

According to the weather service, Tuesday will be predominantly cloudy in the northern and western regions, with showers likely to develop. The north may experience heavy rain with a possibility of thunderstorms, while the southeast is expected to remain drier.

The Met Office forecasts a gradual warming trend in the southeast from Wednesday to Friday, with dry and sunny weather anticipated. Conversely, the northern and western parts of the UK are likely to stay cloudier, with intermittent spells of rain and temperatures hovering around average levels.

This change in weather follows a heatwave that saw the UK break its June temperature record for three consecutive days. On June 26, Santon Downham in Suffolk recorded a temperature of 37.3°C, surpassing the previous record of 35.6°C set in 1976 and 1957.

Andy Page, the chief forecaster at the Met Office, highlighted that Friday marked the peak of the heatwave in terms of temperatures, emphasizing the unprecedented nature of the June heatwave and its implications on temperature extremes in the UK.

Last week also witnessed new temperature records being set, with Wales recording a new June daily maximum temperature of 35.9°C at Bute Park in Cardiff, and Northern Ireland matching its warmest June day on record with 30.8°C at Castlederg, equaling the temperature recorded in 1976.
