The inquest into the death of Maddy Cusack, a former Sheffield United player, revealed that her coach engaged in psychological tactics with her prior to her passing. Cusack, 27, was discovered unconscious by her father at their residence in Horsley, Derbyshire, on September 20, 2023, and passed away later that day. Testimony presented at Chesterfield Coroner’s Court indicated that the coach, Jonathan Morgan, had made remarks about Cusack’s weight during his time managing Sheffield United Women.
According to Grace Riglar, Cusack’s partner, the stress Cusack experienced was largely attributed to Morgan’s presence at the club. Riglar described how Cusack felt personally targeted by the coach’s actions, particularly when she was no longer a regular starter despite previously being a key player. Riglar expressed that Cusack interpreted the coach’s decisions as deliberate mind games, leading to significant emotional distress.
The court also heard accounts of Cusack’s unease with Morgan’s behavior, including comments about her weight that influenced her eating and exercise habits. Additionally, Morgan’s insistence on players disclosing relationships and referring to Riglar as “Mrs Cusack” caused discomfort to Cusack. Prior to her passing, Cusack had expressed a desire to transition away from football and pursue a career as a flight attendant in Dubai, as she felt trapped in her current circumstances.
Testimonies from Cusack’s colleagues and associates further shed light on her state of mind before her death. Eoin Doyle, Cusack’s line manager at Sheffield United, recalled her apprehension upon encountering Morgan and noted a change in her usual demeanor. Doyle also mentioned Morgan’s reference to Cusack as “love sick” after Riglar’s departure, indicating concerns about her well-being.
Despite the unfolding details, Doyle maintained that Cusack had not shown any signs of self-harm intentions. The inquest proceedings are ongoing as more insights into the circumstances surrounding Cusack’s tragic death are being revealed.
