The spouse of a wealthy Ukrainian businessman, Vadym Yermolaiev, has clarified that she was not present during the Monaco bombing incident that critically injured her husband. Initially, reports suggested that Anna Ermolaeva, the wife of Vadym, had lost both her legs in the explosion caused by a parcel bomb at a residential complex in Monaco. However, it has been confirmed that she was not harmed during the attack and was elsewhere at the time.
Anna Ermolaeva confirmed her safety to Ukrainian media, stating that she was not at the scene of the explosion but expressed being under significant stress. She emphasized cooperation with authorities in the ongoing investigation.
Another individual, whose identity remains undisclosed, sustained severe injuries in the bombing, including amputations of limbs, while her 17-year-old son was also hurt but is now in stable condition after being thrown a considerable distance. The attack occurred as residents returned home peacefully, with the explosive device detonated in the building’s entrance.
According to Christophe Mirmand, Monaco’s minister of state, the family was targeted in the explosion as they entered their apartment building. French authorities are conducting a manhunt for the perpetrator who fled the scene. The incident is being treated as attempted murder rather than terrorism, as confirmed by Monaco’s public prosecutor, Stephane Thibault.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, with Vadym Yermolaiev being the most prominent victim. Yermolaiev, a Ukrainian entrepreneur who became a Cypriot citizen in 2017, was ranked as one of the wealthiest individuals in Ukraine in 2020, with a substantial fortune of £173.8 million.
