In the mid-2000s and early 2010s, the TV show Top Gear gained massive popularity, featuring A-list celebrities and luxurious supercars on the BBC network. However, during its initial revival in the early 2000s, the show faced challenges in obtaining desired vehicles due to its lower influence at the time.
One car that was particularly hard to secure was the new Ferrari Enzo, the flagship model named after Enzo Ferrari, with only a few units in the UK. The production team’s struggle ended when Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason offered his own Enzo for the show, with a unique condition attached, as reported by Wales Online.
Nick Mason shared the story on Benedict Fowler’s Road to Success podcast, revealing that he initially hesitated to lend the Enzo for free. However, a conversation with Jeremy Clarkson changed the situation when Nick mentioned his recently launched book, prompting Clarkson to creatively promote it on the show.
Former Top Gear producer Andy Wilman later acknowledged the impact of Jeremy’s book promotion, which defied BBC rules on product placement. Despite this, the Enzo segment aired and became a memorable part of Top Gear. The show’s popularity continued to rise, establishing itself as a valuable property for the BBC.
