A mother shared how she observed her young child walking with a slight difficulty, only to later discover that he was suffering from a rare and aggressive type of cancer.
Two-year-old Maxton Bowman had just started walking when his parents noticed his unusual gait, which quickly progressed to the point where he could no longer use his legs.
Following the development of a concerning blood rash in September 2025, Maxton was taken to Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle for blood tests. The results revealed that he had lymphoblastic leukemia, a rapidly growing blood cancer.
Maxton has since undergone extensive medical care and is currently awaiting his next round of chemotherapy due to low neutrophil levels affecting his immune system. His mother, Coralle, described her immediate protective instincts upon receiving the diagnosis and emphasized the family’s efforts to stay positive amidst the challenges.
Despite being autistic and non-verbal, Maxton had already faced health obstacles from birth, including a delayed development and other sensory issues. His mother affectionately described him as a joyful child who lives in his own world.
After achieving the milestone of learning to walk before his second birthday, Maxton’s health took a sudden downturn as he lost the ability to use his legs. Several hospital visits initially yielded normal blood results until a significant drop in platelet count and noticeable changes in behavior led to the cancer diagnosis.
Through months of intensive treatments, surgeries, and chemotherapy, Maxton faced severe side effects, including temporary loss of leg function and complications from medications. Despite these challenges, his resilient spirit remains evident, with his mother highlighting his unwavering positivity even during the toughest times.
Recently, Maxton marked a significant recovery by regaining the ability to crawl and eventually walk again, showcasing his determination to overcome obstacles. Due to his condition and autism, he requires constant supervision for safety, prompting his parents to seek a specialized bed to ensure his well-being.
To support Maxton’s ongoing care needs, his family initiated a GoFundMe campaign and organized a community bike ride fundraiser, aiming to provide a secure sleeping environment for him. Coralle expressed a desire for people to recognize Maxton’s strength and resilience rather than pity, emphasizing his inspiring journey of perseverance.
