US President Donald Trump recently shared a photo of an Israeli strike on an Iranian oil depot, falsely claiming it was a recent American attack on Iran. The image depicted flames and smoke from an Israeli assault on the Shahran oil depot in Tehran on June 15, 2025. Trump alleged that the strike was in retaliation for Iran’s recent bombing of ships, warning of more severe consequences if such actions were repeated.
Subsequently, it was clarified that the image Trump shared was not from the stated date. Following several vessel attacks in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil trade, the US conducted additional strikes on Iran. The conflict escalated from joint US-Israeli attacks on Iranian sites in February, leading to tensions that hindered peace efforts.
Despite previous efforts to reach a peace understanding, a recent confrontation disrupted progress. An agreement between the US and Iran aimed to reopen the vital Strait of Hormuz, ensuring the resumption of merchant vessel movements. However, Trump declared the ceasefire over at a NATO summit, authorizing further US strikes on Iran to prevent threats to navigation in the strait.
