“Lioness Legend Jill Scott Backs Under-16 Social Media Ban”

Published on

Renowned former Lioness player, Jill Scott, voices support for a ban on social media for individuals under 16, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing physical activity over screen time. Scott, who represented England from 2006 to 2022, advocates for fostering friendships and promoting physical fitness through sports rather than excessive screen use.

Highlighting the need for meaningful human connections, Scott acknowledges the prevalence of technology in modern society but stresses the significance of maintaining interpersonal relationships to prevent feelings of isolation among the younger generation. She believes that engaging in sports can facilitate social interactions and contribute to overall well-being.

The proposed government initiative to prohibit social media access for under-16s encompasses popular platforms such as Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and others. The measure, supported by a majority of parents, is anticipated to be presented in Parliament before the upcoming Christmas season, with protective measures set to be enforced by Spring 2027.

Scott, co-owner of the Boxx2Boxx coffee shop in Northenden, Manchester, underscores the importance of balance in utilizing technology while ensuring that it does not overshadow the benefits of physical activity. Drawing from her personal experience of engaging in sports from a young age, she advocates for outdoor play and regular exercise as essential components of a healthy lifestyle for children.

Having achieved a successful football career that spanned over 18 years and included 161 appearances for England, Scott emphasizes the mental benefits of sports in reducing overthinking and promoting mental well-being. She encourages individuals to pursue physical activities as a means of releasing stress and staying mentally agile.

As an advocate for women’s football and a prominent figure in the sports industry, Scott partners with Starling Bank for the ‘Kick On’ campaign, aimed at addressing the underfunding of grassroots women’s football teams. She underscores the importance of supporting young female athletes and ensuring the sustainability of women’s football for future generations. Scott’s commitment to empowering aspiring female footballers reflects her dedication to fostering a new generation of talented athletes.

By sharing her personal journey and championing the ‘Kick On’ initiative, Scott aims to inspire young girls to pursue their passion for football and overcome societal barriers. Her dedication to promoting gender equality in sports and advocating for equal opportunities underscores her commitment to empowering women in the field of athletics.

Joining forces with Starling Bank, Scott encourages businesses to sponsor grassroots women’s football teams to address the funding gap and provide young athletes with the resources needed to pursue their dreams. Through her involvement in the ‘Kick On’ campaign, Scott aims to create a supportive environment for aspiring female footballers and ensure the continued growth and development of women’s football at the grassroots level.
