Andy Burnham celebrated his success in securing Labour Party nominations by attending a glamorous showbiz awards event with the Manchester band James. The future Prime Minister humorously mentioned Count Binface as carrying the nation’s hopes in the Clacton by-election against Nigel Farage.
Burnham, who had previously met the band at a concert in Manchester, requested and was granted permission to use one of their songs in a previous election campaign. He eagerly accepted the opportunity to present the Legend award to James at the prestigious Silver Clef Awards in London, where he was warmly received by fans and fellow celebrities.
During the event, Burnham’s presence stood out among stars like Lily Allen, Pink, and Sam Fender. Despite being the main attraction, he graciously praised James and expressed his admiration for their music and impact on society. The band members were impressed that Burnham chose to attend and speak at the ceremony on the same day he received substantial support for his Labour leadership bid.
In his speech, Burnham light-heartedly avoided political discussions but playfully acknowledged Count Binface’s role in the election. The crowd responded enthusiastically to his remarks, and he continued to highlight James’ musical excellence and meaningful lyrics, praising their anti-racist anthem and soulful performances.
After receiving the award, Burnham was jovially teased by lead singer Tim Booth for the responsibilities awaiting him. Booth expressed good wishes for Burnham’s leadership journey and his endeavors to create a more equitable society.
